Support has ended for your version of Joomla 3.10. Migrate to Joomla 4 as soon as possible.
- Published in Joomla Help
Support for Joomla 3.10 has officially ended and now all Joomla 3 sites warn administrators to migrate to Joomla 4 as soon as possible. In this article we'll show you what that process entails, so you can decide to start migrating directly or ask for help where you need it. Here at The Joomla Expert, we provide fixed price proposals for Joomla migrations! We have been offering Joomla development services since the very beginning of Joomla, from 1.0 through to today's Joomla 4 migration needs.
Can we skip the Joomla 4 migration?
In the short term - Yes - Joomla 3 is a very stable CMS and over the years we have noted that Joomla CMS tends to degrade quite gracefully. Typically, when there is a failure it typically presents a message that tells us what the problem is. However. the main reason we find customer require Joomla 3 to Joomla 4 migrations are because hosting companies are now also upgrading server software, such as updating PHP to PHP8. This often causes PHP to throw errors, as code is deprecated. Typically, this is code in the template or a 3rd party extension rather than Joomla core itself. This is a pretty bad scenario because typically it will mean your business website is either entirely offline, or is showing serious errors to your customer base.
Do we recommend the Joomla 4 migration?
Yes, we recommend you migrate your site to Joomla 4 as soon as possible. Remember, you will need to migrate to Joomla 4 sooner or later, and so running the risk of downtime or hosting-induced errors appearing is not worth the trouble. Ina ddition, you're missing out on the great features that Joomla 4 offers, more accessibility, and a much faster codebase.
What about going strright to Joomla 5 you ask? As the upgrade path from Joomla 3 to Joomla 5 would still require migrating through Joomla 4, it still makes sense to migrate to Joomla 4. Just like any large software project, the roadmap for Joomla major releases and the actual release timeframe can vary, so Joomla 5 may or may not get released on the originally announced schedule. Either way, Joomla 4 migration is necessary so taking the advantages of the migration right now makes a lot more sense than waiting and having to migrate through Joomla 4 later.

How do we organize a Joomla 3 to Joomla 4 migration?
Previously, we explained how we organize a Joomla 4 migration project. You're invited to check that out but we will repeat the best advice for that process here - make sure to take a backup before proceeding. If you don't have a backup tool in place, install the free version of keeba Backup and run it before proceeding. If for some reason you can't get a good backup, call a professional - the possibility of losing all of the historial data on your website is not worth the risk.
